Kashi: The Nagari of Lord Shiva – Famous God in Varanasi

Banaras is considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva, the supreme Hindu deity known as the destroyer and transformer. People say that Varanasi is where the first jyotirlinga, the fiery beam of light that Shiva used to show that he was the most powerful god, broke through the Earth’s and hit up into the sky. It is believed that Lord Shiva himself established Kashi and blessed it with his eternal presence. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the most revered temples in the city. This is one of the most important Shiva temples in Hinduism. It is believed that visiting this temple and taking a dip in the holy Ganges River can wash away all sins and lead to salvation. It is described in the Puranas, including the Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana. Lord Shiva is also known as Vishwanatha and Vishweshwarar, both of which translate to “the ruler of the universe”. The city’s spiritual atmosphere is infused with chants of “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Har Har mahadev” as devotees from all walks of life come to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
